About Mývatn Nature Baths
Mývatn Nature Baths includes an artificial lagoon and pool of geothermally heated water and was opened for visitors in 2004 as a spa and relaxation center. However, its hot water source has been used by locals for bathing and washing purposes for a very long time. The water for the lagoon comes from the borehole in Bjarnarflag, belonging to the National Power Company. The original temperature of the hot water at 130⁰C is cooled down to the range of 36⁰-40⁰C to make it hospitable for you.
If you find Blue Lagoon to be too crowded and touristy, Mývatn Nature Baths is a great choice. You can revel in its sheer beauty with a refreshing soak, enjoying the incredible views around.
The Healing Waters
The exquisite blue shade of the water – an effect of the Sulphur content found in the baths will entice you at first glance! But, there’s more to it than what meets the eye. The alkaline property and high composition of Sulphur and other minerals in the water have proven to reward bathers with many benefits. From asthma to respiratory diseases to skin conditions, the water can provide relief to several health issues.
For this reason, Mývatn Nature Baths have been drawing a significant number of locals and tourists since its opening. Fortunately, you wouldn’t find it too crowded and have the full benefit of enjoying an opulent experience with nature!
In addition to the pools, Mývatn Nature Baths also house two saunas to enjoy geothermal steam baths that will relax your muscles and improve your mood. Then, you can freshen up at the showers and head to Café Kvika to satisfy your hunger pangs! Energize yourself with delicious snacks and a warm cup of coffee.
Guests are required to shower before getting into the geothermal baths. It’s important to make sure you remove all your jewelry before getting into the baths, as the Sulphur can leave them blackened and damaged.
