Bjorbodin is the first beer spa in Iceland and is mandatory for anyone up for a phenomenal experience. Opened in 2017, it is located close to the village of Árskógssandur in Akureyri, North Iceland. Now, the idea of bathing in a tub of beer is sure to pique your curiosity, especially if you haven’t indulged in one before. Would I be soaked with alcohol? Well, let us start by saying that the beer you bathe in is not edible. But the good news is, there’s a beer draught beside every tub to treat your taste buds.
What’s used at this beer spa in Iceland is identified as “young beer,” referring to alcohol-less beer, very early in its fermentation process. In addition, there are also hops, brewer’s yeast, oil, beer salt, and water blended perfectly to cleanse, soften, and revitalize your skin and hair. The ingredients also contain anti-inflammatory properties to provide a soothing effect. It is maintained at a warming temperature of 37-39⁰C and refilled after every guest! Besides the private room, there’s also an outdoor tub that allows you to enjoy a bath while enjoying the stunning scenery.
Bjorbodin sits on the edge of Eyjafjörður fjord on the east coast of the Tröllaskagi Peninsula. It is a part of the Kaldi Brewery in Árskógssandur. In fact, Kaldi is the famous local beer that you get to taste during your bath! The beer spa consists of seven large wooden tubs filled with young beer, each in a private room. Upon arriving, you will be led to one of them. The minimal yet attractive interior will invite you to hop right into the tub and embrace the sensation of supreme relaxation.
The session lasts for 25 minutes, and afterward, you can go to the relaxation room, where you can unwind for another good 25 minutes. As the beer bath doesn’t intoxicate you by any means, it is ideal for all ages! But, an adult must accompany those who are below 20 years. In addition to the spa, there is also an on-site restaurant and bar where you can enjoy beer-based specialities.
As Bjorbodin Beer Spa can only accommodate a maximum of 14 guests per session, it’s important that you book early as possible. They will provide you with towels and robes and access to a locker to store your belongings safely for the moment. It is advised not to shower for 4-5 hours after a beer bath to reap the full benefits of the soak. You will definitely feel a difference!
