Tour Details

Glacier Lagoon Iceland (Jökulsárlón)

The Glacier lagoonJökulsárlón, and it’s surrounding glacial wonderland is truly one of a kind and certainly not to be missed. The Glacier Lagoon is a stunning force of nature which is fed with icebergs from one of the the offsprings of the largest ice caps in Iceland, Vatnajökull. Part of the scenery is the black basalt iceberg decorated Diamond beach. As the ice breaks away from the melting glacier it drifts through the lagoon and towards the ocean which creates a very unique landscape that is constantly moving and shifting. We will also make time during the drive to visit well selected places on the south coast including the mysterious Seljalandsfoss waterfall that you can walk behind and the charming Vík village with it’s black sand beach and majestic Reynisdrangar seastacks.

Being located in the south east some 380 km from the capital, The Glacier Lagoon tour is our longest day tour (14 hrs) but most certainly worth the drive.

Highlights

  • Glacier Lagoon – Jökulsárlón
  • Diamond Beach
  • Boat ride (optional extra)
  • Seljalandsfoss waterfall
  • Vík village

Itinerary

Our day tour will begin with our fast and efficient pickup service. We will come and collect you from either, one of the hotels in the centre of Reykjavik or from one of the many pick-up spots dotted across the city. When all our guests are aboard we will begin our journey along the scenic road through the South Coast Tour Iceland. You will pass by views of the black sand beaches, glaciers and lava fields that make up the dramatic landscape of the area.

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

Our first destination, and Iceland’s crown jewel, is the Glacier Lagoon itself, located near Vatnajökull National Park, some 380 km (5 hrs drive) from Reykjavík. This ice lagoon attracts an incredible amount of people for its stunning beauty and it has even become a popular filming location. Check out The James Bond films, Die Another Day and A View to a Kill if you want to have a sneak preview.

The ice lagoon is a naturally made lagoon that started to form in front of one of Vatnajökull outlet glaciers, as the glaciers started to retreat beginning last century. The lagoon is fed by beautiful icebergs that break of the snout of Breiðarmerkurjökull glacial tongue that role, tumble and drift around the lagoon for years making them change colours, shape and appearance frequently. Those sculptures of nature eventually become small enough to be taken by the current and washed out to sea. The whole glacial scenario is simply breathtaking same as that of the Secret lagoon tour Iceland.

A fantastic way to explore the lagoon in the summertime and be surrounded by the elements is to take a short boat ride across the lagoon (tickets available for purchase on the bus). It allows you to admire the ice formation up close and sail in between the icebergs.

Diamond Beach

When exploring the area around the Glacier Lagoon, the beach on Breiðarmerkursandur is not to be missed. Better known as the Diamond Beach, this beautiful stretch of black basalt sand is spreading its arms out and giving shelter to smaller icebergs that have been washed out to sea from the lagoon. The contrasts of the black sand and the sparkling pieces of ice are beyond this world. Don’t forget to take in the fill your lungs with fresh air and feel the peacefulness as you walk in between the diamonds. You might even be lucky enough to spot a few seals playing in the surf.

When our time at the lagoon comes to an end, we head back along the south coast and visit the remaining places of interest.

Vík Village and Reynisdrangar Seastacks

Vík í Mýrdalis a small village and is in fact the most southerly village on the island. The town only houses 300 inhabitants but this is a great location for you to get gifts for the people waiting for you back home and to refuel. Vík is beautifully situated on the seafront and surrounded by grassy green mountains. The black beach at Vík is extremely beautiful and its wonderfully sculpted sea stacks only add to its beauty.

Seljalandsfoss waterfall

Last but not least is Seljalandsfoss waterfall. Its popularity is well deserved as the Seljalandsfoss waterfall houses a very special surprise. When conditions are safe enough visitors are able to walk behind the cascade and get a tremendous view of the waterfall from behind. The water that feeds this 60m tall waterfall originates from the (in)famous Eyjafjallajökull glacier-capped volcano. Before we get back on the bus please use the opportunity to refill your water bottles at the river coming down the waterfall. We can say without a doubt that it’s the best water in the world!

The journey through the countryside back to Reykjavík takes around 2 hrs.
